Welcome

With summer officially over and going into autumn it’s time to salvage what is left from 2024 and look forward to what is to come in 2025.

In the Vegetable Garden and Orchard, we are busy picking, storing and freezing anything edible from the garden. At the same time, we are planting a late crop of dwarf beans, sowing salad and cabbage seeds and harvesting our own seeds for next year.

Cuttings are being taken from the Cold frame, where they have spent the summer, and planted into the soil whilst it is still warm.

The Daffodil area will have a last cut and then new daffodil bulbs will be planted. We have a lovely (new to us)  miniature daffcalled Sun Disc which at 6 inches high should happily sit next to the path in front of the taller varieties.

The Bog Garden is very lush and I would point out the lovely pink Chelone flowering at its edge.

The White Schizostylis or Hesperantha is in flower in the Water Garden- native of South Africa this member of the Iris family likes damp conditions and probably a little more sun than we are providing but fingers crossed.

In the east lawn Shrubbery the scented violet flowered clematis Wyevale is in flower, not a climber like other Clematis but clump forming and growing up to 3ft.

The West lawn still has plenty of colour- don’t miss the pink spikes of the Lespedeza by the bay tree and the Oleander in flower in the pots. Asters are ready to flower, dahlias need dead heading and the lovely white Clematis on the Pergola is kaiu.

Lots of Carp in the Moat and large Eel, the Heron and Cormorant continue to visit. The Water Lilies were given me by a friend clearing out a small garden pond many years ago and boy do they like it here! A lovely sight we often see is the Moorhens walking on top of them. Rabbits and Squirrels everywhere. Very few Butterflies this year apart from the Red Admiral but we still host the House Martins and Fly Catchers
